Enerhaugen - Pilot Flight Academy Concept and Direction : Carl Henrik Strandenæs Production Insight The ambition to make a film about the life as a student pilot had been there since I started my education in early 2015. What kept me from going was really that I had a hard time figuring out what direction the project should take. The difficulty of making a film about the life of a student-pilot is that there are a lot of different aspects of the lifestyle. People tend to think that all we do is in-flight training, but in reality we do way more theory than flying. Mostly our daily lives consists of class-education, calculations and reading. Besides all of that through a year we have a few vacation-weeks we spend carefully. I had several visions for how a film about the life as a student pilot could be made. I was for a while thinking about only introducing the aviation-aspect of the education by just showing flying lessons, but a decision I made quite early on was to try to show the majority of all the different aspects of being a student pilot. Once that was clear I started production in the late spring of 2015. I wanted the film to reflect reality and not present pilot-education for something that it is not. It was obvious to me that we needed to cheat a little bit in therms of the time we spend on doing theory and the time we spend flying. Actually we fly only a fraction of the time we spend doing theory, but I figured reflecting absolute reality by showing the correct relationship between flying-lessons and theory would not be able to deliver the best memorable moments of a pilot eduction. Applying depth to the project was important to me. One of the aspects that I felt strongly needed to take a large portion of the film was the radio communication. I think that integrating ATC conversations with the footage really gives the feeling of going on a journey as well as it shows the complexity of what we do. I also introduced to this film "the first person feel», something I really haven’t done before. At the beginning of the film during the «wake up» sequence my thought was to put the ordinance directly into the situation by having them be me, waking up in my bed and getting ready for school. I think that gives a more personal touch to the project and puts the ordinance right into the situation of being a student-pilot. The Ending of «Life As A Student Pilot» became quite clear to me as we had started filming. I wanted a sequence where all the aspects of being a student pilot came together. Throughout the film theory and flying had been shown in different sequences. At the end of the film it was important to me to remind the ordinance of the connection between them by having them be in the same sequence. The scene where the female student (Shene) was looking out on the runway and the plane was coming by was actually one of the first scenes we shot of the project. I saw just how iconic the scene was and immediately recognized that it had to be part of the ending. I also wanted the film to become a circle and taking us back to the beginning. The film starts with me waking up and getting ready for school. For the ending I wanted the same type of sequence just in reverse. This time instead of the big airliner taxing out and me taking on my sweater, the airliner is taxing in and I’m taking off my sweater. Having a clear connection between the ending and beginning I think is extremely important and was something I spent an excessive amount of time and effort on trying to achieve. To sum up the production of «Life as a student pilot» it truly was a really exciting experience. I had a blast making this film even though I became exhausted working as hard with the project as I am with school. - Carl Henrik Strandenæs

Dating to the 1960s, this Soviet film shows some of the USSR's manned rockets and the Baikonur Cosmodrome in southern Kazakhstan. It was the world's first and largest operational space launch facility. The rocket shown appears to be of the Voshkod or Soyuz variety. At 1:30, the film discusses the difference between a rocket engine and an artillery shell and a jet aircraft engine. At 2:11, cosmonauts arrive at the launch site. At 4:17, some cosmonaut training is seen using a High G-Force Centrifuge. At 4:58, the two cosmonauts are ready for launch. The launch takes place a short time later at 5:19. Telemetry tracks the rocket into space and animation shows the orbit of the capsule. Various types of orbits are explained. The presence of two astronauts indicates this may have been Voskhod 2, a Soviet manned space mission in March 1965. The Voskhod rocket (Russian: Восход, "ascent", "dawn") was a derivative of the Soviet R-7 ICBM designed for the human spaceflight programme but later used for launching Zenit reconnaissance satellites. It consisted of the Molniya 8K78M third stage minus the Blok L. In 1966, all R-7 variants were equipped with the uprated core stage and strap-ons of the Soyuz 11A511. The Blok I stage in the Voskhod booster used the RD-107 engine rather than the RD-110 in the Soyuz, which was more powerful and also man-rated. The sole exception to this were the two manned Voskhod launches, which had RD-108 engines, a man-rated RD-107 but with the same performance. The Soyuz (Russian: Союз, meaning "union", GRAU index 11A511) was a Soviet expendable carrier rocket designed in the 1960s by OKB-1 and manufactured by State Aviation Plant No. 1 in Kuybyshev, Soviet Union. It was commissioned to launch Soyuz spacecraft as part of the Soviet human spaceflight program, first with 8 unmanned test flights, followed by the first 19 manned launches.[1] The original Soyuz also propelled four test flights of the improved Soyuz 7K-T capsule between 1972 and 1974. In total it flew 30 successful missions over 10 years and suffered two failures. Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 – August 26, 1974), nicknamed Slim, Lucky Lindy, and The Lone Eagle, was an American aviator, author, inventor, military officer, explorer, and social activist. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UHQHUG/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B004UHQHUG&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=def7bc72cfb152e0e0d098d082954ff8 As a 25-year-old U.S. Air Mail pilot, Lindbergh emerged suddenly from virtual obscurity to instantaneous world fame as the result of his Orteig Prize-winning solo nonstop flight on May 20–21, 1927, made from the Roosevelt Field in Garden City on New York's Long Island to Le Bourget Field in Paris, France, a distance of nearly 3,600 statute miles (5,800 km), in the single-seat, single-engine, purpose-built Ryan monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. As a result of this flight, Lindbergh was the first person in history to be in New York one day and Paris the next. The record setting flight took 33 hours and 30 minutes. Lindbergh, a U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve officer, was also awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic exploit. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Lindbergh used his fame to promote the development of both commercial aviation and Air Mail services in the United States and the Americas. In March 1932, his infant son, Charles, Jr., was kidnapped and murdered in what was soon dubbed the "Crime of the Century". It was described by journalist H. L. Mencken, as "... the biggest story since the resurrection." The kidnapping eventually led to the Lindbergh family's being "driven into voluntary exile" in Europe, to which they sailed in secrecy from New York under assumed names in late December 1935 to "seek a safe, secluded residence away from the tremendous public hysteria" in America. The Lindberghs returned to the United States in April 1939. Before the United States formally entered World War II, Lindbergh had been an outspoken advocate of keeping the U.S. out of the world conflict, as had his father, Congressman Charles August Lindbergh, during World War I. Although Lindbergh was a leader in the antiwar America First movement, he nevertheless strongly supported the war effort after Pearl Harbor and flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a civilian consultant, though President Franklin D. Roosevelt had refused to reinstate his Army Air Corps colonel's commission from which he had resigned in April 1941. In his later years, Lindbergh became a prolific prize-winning author, international explorer, inventor, and environmentalist. Verdensberømtheder i København (1939) was a Danish short subject produced by the Dansk Film Co. in which Charles Lindbergh as well as Hollywood actors Robert Taylor, Myrna Loy, and Edward G. Robinson all appeared as themselves. The 1938 Paramount film Men with Wings (Fred MacMurray, Ray Milland) featured a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis fashioned from a Ryan B-1 "Brougham" similar to one presented to Lindbergh by the manufacturer, the Mahoney Aircraft Corporation, shortly after the Spirit was retired in April 1928. The 1942 MGM picture Keeper of the Flame (Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy) features Hepburn as the widow of Robert V. Forrest, a "Lindbergh-like" national hero, who was exposed after his death as a secret fascist intending to use his influence—especially over America's youth—to turn the country into a fascist state and eliminate those he deemed as inferior races. Four years after its 1953 publication, Lindbergh's second book about his flying "partner" served as the basis for the namesake major Hollywood Cinemascope motion picture The Spirit of St. Louis, directed by Billy Wilder and released on April 20, 1957, one month short of the 30th anniversary of the flight to Paris. The Spirit was "portrayed" in the film by three flyable replicas of the Ryan NYP, while Lindbergh was played by veteran American actor and fellow Army aviator James Stewart. In order to accurately depict the transatlantic flight, three replicas at a cost of $1.3 million (equal to more than $11 million in 2013) were made of the Spirit of St. Louis for the various location and studio film units. A similar Ryan Brougham was bought by Stewart and modified with Lindbergh's supervision. Lindbergh has also been the subject of numerous screen, television, and other documentary films over the years, including Charles A. Lindbergh (1927), a UK documentary by De Forest Phonofilm based on Lindbergh's milestone flight, 40,000 Miles with Lindbergh (1928) featuring Charles A. Lindbergh, and The American Experience—Lindbergh: The Shocking, Turbulent Life of America's Lone Eagle (1988) PBS documentary directed by Stephen Ives. The story of Lindbergh and his association with the former German Nazi Party was featured on the Science Channel TV show, Dark Matters: Twisted But True. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Lindbergh
